I Am Leaving

Kitchen, Glen Iris, 11.21am

In exactly two weeks I will be sitting in a plastic chair at Melbourne Airport, an hour from take off. So I'm approximately two weeks and thirty hours from setting foot in Lisbon, Portugal, the beginning of my grande vacance of 2009.

I have never been to Europe. I have never spent more than a month overseas. I have never driven a Formula One racing car. In the four months that I plan to spend touring The Continent (as I shall refer to it), I will cross at least two of those off my life's to do list.

The purpose of this blog is to enable all of you to take the trip with me, without my epic, daily emails. Hopefully you'll enjoy my trip almost as much as me through my wit, intelligent observation and general diverting manner. I will email when I've written a new blog, with highlights, so you won't miss a moment of my travelling trials and tribulations (ie a blow by blow account of what I've eaten and drunk and how many Jose/Pierre/Hans's I've met). And then you may choose whether to read the intimate details or hear the stories first hand when I return.

I look forward to your company on my trip and I love an audience, so expect the long-winded accounts of everything!
